There comes a time in every woman’s life where she simply longs for that glowing complexion, or should we say a “dewy” look. A dewy foundation contains ingredients that help the skin to look hydrated, glowing and at times add more sheen to the skin for a natural glow. Aside from having an amazing skincare routine, applying your makeup with the right products is crucial. You want to make sure that you are keeping your skin hydrated, exfoliating regularly—but not too often, avoiding matte formulas – if you have oily or combination skin you may want to disregard this trick. Opting to not use matte formulas will leave your skin extra shiny and oily. Apply your makeup with a damp sponge, choose cream textured products over powders, generously apply highlighter and lastly, use a dewy finish setting spray.

What are the benefits of a dewy look? For starters, when your complexion is too dry, the wrong base can settle into fine lines, accentuate peach fuzz and latch onto skin flakes. That’s where hydrating formulas come in. Often packed with oils and acids, particular foundations promise to soothe skin, moisturize without making you look oily, and photograph well.

Those are a few of my personal favorites. Next up we have the dewy foundation cushions. Some maybe wonder, well, what on earth is that? The dewy foundation cushion is an extra essential. It is the ultra-radiant version of the skin-perfecting crowd face, made with light-reflecting pigments and luminous oils that make the skin look like it’s lit from within – another great product for those who are looking to do a photoshoot.
Pro tip: photoshoot makeup is not the same as the makeup you use for your everyday look. When booking a professional makeup artist for your special day ask whether or not they use particular makeup to enhance your look for a photo shoot. This will make your images stand out and make the editing process for your photographer far easier.
Using a dewy foundation cushion comes with many pros, one of which is that the product is known for being lightweight and gentle on the skin – especially when applied and blended out with the soft applicator. Most are also reusable, airtight, and travel-friendly so that, if you take a trip somewhere, you won’t have to worry about opening your carry-on to a great big mess.
Cushion foundations are designed so that you only get the most minimal amount of product.
The foundation in cushion foundations cannot be thick or heavy and is a bit runny and lightweight to even pass through the sponge – side note though, sponges absorb the product.

Dewy Foundation for Oily Skin
If you have oily skin and are wondering if you should use a dewy foundation or opt for something matte, our recommendation is matte. While a dewy foundation is great, some of the cons we’ve noticed are: it doesn’t last throughout the day, has a harder time covering hyperpigmentation or certain skin concerns, can appear greasy looking on skin that already tends to become oily, can cause the skin to look noticeably shiny and can enhance the look of breakouts. If you have breakouts or blemishes, dewy foundation formulas can sometimes draw more attention to them than you’d prefer.
Matte foundation pros for those with oily skin: provides full coverage, eliminates any shine, matte formulas are long-lasting, matte foundations are oil-free. However, on dry skin, it can pose a problem. All in all, you want to be mindful of your skin type and use the products that best suits you and that will aid in making you feel more confident.
